A Ship That Came Ashore

Step off the south exit of JR Higashi-Shizuoka Station and you are immediately confronted by an enormous vessel — or rather a building that looks unmistakably like one. This is Granship, the Shizuoka Convention and Arts Center. Developed by Shizuoka Prefecture and designed by internationally acclaimed architect Arata Isozaki (Arata Isozaki Atelier), the 12-floor complex was completed in 1998 and opened to the public in March 1999.

The structure’s sweeping, ship-like form is not incidental: Isozaki drew on Shizuoka’s coastal and maritime connections to translate the idea of a ship into architectural form, linking the building’s character to the region’s history. The large-span steel construction allowed for the column-free interior volumes required by a major multi-purpose venue, while also producing the smooth hull-like exterior. Inside, the complex houses the main Hall “Umi” (Sea) with over 2,000 seats, mid-sized halls named “Daichi” (Earth), “Kaze” (Wind) and “Sora” (Sky), plus exhibition halls and conference rooms — serving concerts, academic conferences and exhibitions throughout the year.

Arata Isozaki and Granship

Isozaki is one of the most significant architects of the late 20th century. Known for the Oita Prefectural Library (1966) and Tsukuba Center Building (1983) among many others, he built a reputation for architecture that engaged with history and context in an avant-garde, postmodern register. At Granship, those instincts are evident: the ship is not a nostalgic gesture but a structural and cultural argument about place. Isozaki was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2019, and Granship is counted among his major works.

Summary

Completed 1998, opened 1999, 12 floors. Granship is Shizuoka Prefecture’s flagship convention and arts venue, designed by Arata Isozaki Atelier. Its one-of-a-kind ship-shaped exterior and richly programmed interior make it a landmark worth visiting at Higashi-Shizuoka.
