A Tower Rising on the Memory of Dojunkai

At 17 Daikanyamacho, Shibuya, Tokyo, the Dojunkai Daikanyama Apartments once stood — completed in 1927, they were among the earliest reinforced-concrete collective housing blocks in Japan, and they left a deep mark on the city’s residential history. After decades of service, the aging complex gave way to urban redevelopment. In August 2000, Daikanyama Address The Tower rose in its place: 36 floors, 119.9 metres tall, with four basement levels.

Design was led jointly by Nihon Sekkei and NTT Facilities. Construction was carried out by a joint venture of Kajima Corporation and Taisei Corporation, under the umbrella of the Daikanyama District Urban Redevelopment Association. The building’s configuration — B4 through 36 floors, plus a rooftop penthouse — brought high-density residential use to a hillside neighbourhood that had long prized a human-scaled character.

A Place With Its Own Gravity

Daikanyama sits roughly midway between Shibuya and Ebisu stations, evolving from Edo-period samurai estates into a distinctive residential neighbourhood. The 1927 Dojunkai apartments were landmarks of their era — a modern vision for collective living — and their memory shaped the neighbourhood’s identity long after they were gone. Redevelopment discussions took time, with considerable attention paid to preserving the neighbourhood’s scale and atmosphere. The outcome was a plan pairing a tall residential tower on the hilltop with lower-rise commercial and cultural uses at ground level.

Summary

Completed August 2000, 36 floors, 119.9 m. Daikanyama Address The Tower stands as a new landmark for Daikanyama while carrying forward the legacy of the Dojunkai apartments that once defined the hill. The layered history of this neighbourhood makes it well worth exploring on foot.
