Shibuya Sakura Stage

A large-scale mixed-use complex completed in November 2023 on the south side of Shibuya Station. Anchored by the 39-story SHIBUYA Tower at approximately 179 metres, it is widely described as the final piece of Shibuya's quarter-century redevelopment.

A New Gateway on Shibuya’s Southern Slope

Walk from Shibuya Station toward the Sakuragaoka exit and a cluster of glass towers rises into view at the top of a gentle hill. Completed on November 30, 2023, Shibuya Sakura Stage is anchored by SHIBUYA Tower — 39 stories above ground, four below, reaching approximately 179 metres — alongside SAKURA Tower (30 stories) and the Central Building (17 stories). Together the three buildings deliver a total gross floor area of some 255,000 square metres. The site was long known as the “back side” of Shibuya, a neighbourhood of steep lanes and ageing low-rise buildings that felt cut off from the station’s energy.

The project was led by the Shibuya Station Sakuragaoka District Urban Redevelopment Association, with Tokyu Land Corporation as a participating member. Nikken Sekkei handled basic and detailed design, while architect Fumihiko Furuya and the firm NASCA served as design architects. Gently curved facades reference cherry blossom petals — a quiet nod to the district’s name, Sakuragaoka, meaning “cherry blossom hill.” SHIBUYA Tower combines office and residential floors; SAKURA Tower is anchored by offices and street-level retail, creating a mixed neighbourhood where work and daily life share the same block.

The Final Piece of Shibuya’s Redevelopment Story

Large-scale redevelopment has reshaped Shibuya Station’s surroundings since the late 2000s. Hikarie opened in 2012, Stream in 2018, and Scramble Square Phase I in 2019. The Sakuragaoka side, with its complex web of land rights, was the last to be resolved — earning the label “final piece” of a transformation that began more than a quarter century ago.

At the heart of the design is an “Urban Core”: a vertical circulation system woven through both towers. Shibuya’s bowl-shaped topography concentrates multiple rail lines and creates sharp elevation changes, especially on the Sakuragaoka side. A pedestrian deck linking the two towers and a series of vertical conveyances bridge the grade change, connecting Shibuya Station directly to the streets below in a way that was not possible before.

Summary

Shibuya Sakura Stage was completed in November 2023, with SHIBUYA Tower’s 39 floors and 179-metre height defining the skyline of the station’s southern approach. Designed by Nikken Sekkei with Fumihiko Furuya and NASCA as design architects, the complex wraps a quarter-century of planning into a set of buildings whose cherry-blossom curves announce themselves against the Shibuya hillside. The south exit offers a quieter, more contemplative way to experience the district — a good reason to leave the scramble crossing behind and walk the slope.
