Haneda Airport D Runway

The fourth runway at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), opened 21 October 2010. Its 2,500-metre surface at the mouth of the Tama River was built on a hybrid structure: a 520,000 m² steel-jacket pier section supported by 1,165 steel-pipe piles, combined with a reclaimed-island section.

A Fourth Runway at the Mouth of the Tama River

At the southernmost tip of Tokyo International Airport (Haneda), where the Tama River empties into Tokyo Bay, the fourth runway opened on 21 October 2010. Known as the D Runway, it stretches 2,500 metres. Construction started in March 2007 and was completed in August 2010. What makes this runway distinctive is its location: because the runway crosses the river-mouth zone, a hybrid design was chosen to avoid obstructing the flow of the Tama River. The river-side section uses a piled pier (bridge) structure, while the bay-side section uses conventional reclaimed land. Together the pier section covers approximately 520,000 square metres of water surface. Ten days after the runway opened, on 31 October 2010, scheduled international flights began operating, adding a new axis to the capital region’s aviation network.

1,165 Steel Piles Beneath the Runway Surface

The pier section rests on 198 prefabricated steel jackets. Each jacket is a modular steel frame assembled on land, transported by barge, and fixed to the seabed via steel-pipe piles — 1,165 piles in total. The seabed at the Tama River mouth is overlaid with thick deposits of soft marine clay, so the piles had to reach deep to provide a foundation capable of bearing wide-body aircraft loads. On the reclaimed-land side, seawalls were constructed first, followed by large-scale sand fill placement and ground-improvement methods such as the sand compaction pile (SCP) technique to stabilise the soft subsoil. The project, largely invisible from the shore, became a frequently cited case study in geotechnical and marine engineering literature after completion.
