Higashi-Shinbashi 1-chome, Minato City, Tokyo. The Shiodome Media Tower occupies the E-block of Shiodome Sio-Site, completed in 2003. Designed by KAJIMA DESIGN (Kajima Corporation) and built by a joint venture of Kajima and Shimizu Corporations, with development led by Mitsui Fudosan, it stands 34 stories above ground (plus four basement levels) and approximately 172 meters tall.

The name “Media Tower” reflects what occupies most of the building: floors 5 through 23 are the headquarters of Kyodo News, Japan’s principal wire service, which distributes content to newspapers, broadcasters, and online media across the country and internationally. The relocation of a major media institution’s headquarters to a newly built high-rise was part of the organizational reshaping that the Shiodome redevelopment made possible.

Park Hotel Tokyo and an award-winning design

Floors 25 through 34 are occupied by Park Hotel Tokyo, a hotel internationally known for individually designed rooms — each featuring original artworks and distinctive decor by different artists. A wire service headquarters and a design-forward boutique hotel sharing the same address is an unusual combination, and one that exemplifies the ambition of the Sio-Site to accommodate diverse programs in close proximity.

The building received the 46th BCS Award (Building Contractors Society Award), a recognition of architectural merit. A notable interior feature is an atrium space designed in dialogue with the Yurikamome elevated transit line running nearby. The approximately 172-meter height is similar to that of the adjacent Shiodome Tower, with both buildings forming part of the district’s mid-range skyline below the 213-meter Dentsu Headquarters.
