A 111-Metre Landmark on the Toyama Plain
In Ushijima-Shinmachi, just north of Toyama Station, a steel-framed tower rises to exactly 111 metres above street level — a height that gave the building its name. Tower 111 was completed on 27 April 1994, making it the tallest building in Toyama City at the time of its completion. Mitsubishi Estate designed the 22-storey, 1-basement-level structure; Sato Kogyo and Shimizu Corporation formed a joint venture to build it. The developer was Intec Amenity Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Intec Inc., a major IT company headquartered in Toyama.
Tower 111 was completed in 1994, a year that coincided with a significant milestone for the developer’s parent company. In a city where high-rise construction was rare, the project represented a major statement of confidence in Toyama’s urban future. The Ushijima district, north of Toyama Station, was an area where the city was concentrating business functions during the early 1990s, and this tower was a pivotal piece of that strategy.
Clarity on a Mountain-Framed Skyline
Toyama City’s skyline is defined by two contrasting elements: the flat alluvial plain of the Toyama Basin, and the dramatic wall of the Tateyama mountain range rising to the south-east. In this context, a 111-metre tower (120.5 metres to the tip of the lightning rod) commands an attention that would be unremarkable in a denser city. The simple rectangular prism of Tower 111 reads as a clean vertical accent against the mountain horizon.
The building accommodates offices, retail floors, and a public observation level. Since the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension to Kanazawa in 2015, Toyama City has accelerated its urban renewal around the station, and Tower 111 continues to anchor the business quarter that first took shape three decades ago.
Summary
Tower 111 was completed in 1994, stands 111 metres tall (120.5 m to the lightning rod), and has 22 floors above ground and 1 below. Designed by Mitsubishi Estate and built by Sato Kogyo and Shimizu Corporation, the tower was Toyama City’s tallest building for many years and remains a key landmark of the city’s north station quarter.
Against the backdrop of the Northern Alps, the tower makes for an unexpectedly striking urban silhouette. When visiting Toyama, combine Tower 111 with the city’s glass art museum and the castle park for a full picture of this compact Hokuriku city.
