Ochanomizu Station and Hijiri Bridge
JR Ochanomizu Station, opened in 1904, and Hijiri Bridge — a 1927 post-earthquake reinforced-concrete arch spanning the Kandagawa gorge. The renovated Hijiribashi-guchi concourse opened in December 2023, completing a multi-year accessibility upgrade alongside a near-century-old civic landmark.
Three Layers Over the Kandagawa Gorge
Ochanomizu is a district built on the edge of a ravine. The Kandagawa River has cut deep into the Musashino Plateau here, and the result is one of Tokyo’s most layered urban scenes: a rail viaduct, a stone-finished arch bridge, and a subway tunnel all crossing the gorge at different elevations within a few dozen metres of each other.
JR Ochanomizu Station opened in 1904 as part of the Kobu Railway and relocated to its current site in 1932. It now serves the Chūō Line Rapid and the Chūō-Sōbu Line Local, connecting passengers with the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line below. The station straddles the boundary between Chiyoda and Bunkyo wards, at the heart of a district known for its universities, hospitals, and long street of musical-instrument dealers. Standing on the platforms, you look out over a green gorge — an unusual vantage point for a central Tokyo commuter stop.
South of the station, spanning the Kandagawa, is Hijiri Bridge. Completed in 1927, it was built as part of the post-Great Kantō Earthquake reconstruction programme that remade much of central Tokyo’s bridge stock. The bridge is 79.3 metres in total length, with a parabolic reinforced-concrete arch spanning 36.3 metres over the river. The design was carried out by Mamoru Yamada and Katsutake Naruse. The name — Hijiri, meaning “holy” or “sage” — was chosen by public competition: the bridge connects two sacred landmarks, Yushima Seidō (the Confucian shrine) to the north and Nikolai Cathedral to the south.
A Heritage Bridge and a Renewed Station
Hijiri Bridge was designated a Chiyoda Cityscape Heritage structure in 2007 and recognised as a Selected Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2017. Nearly a hundred years after completion, it carries daily traffic while holding a formally acknowledged place in the city’s landscape.
The station, meanwhile, underwent major accessibility work from 2012. To bring barrier-free access to a building embedded in steep terrain, an artificial deck of approximately 2,900 square metres was constructed above the platforms, and new lifts and escalators were installed to connect the deck with both the upper and lower platforms. The redesigned Hijiribashi-guchi concourse opened on 3 December 2023, and the adjacent station plaza came into use on 31 March 2025. The work combined seismic retrofitting with step-free access — a substantial undertaking for a structure wedged into a riverside cliff.
Summary
Ochanomizu Station opened in 1904 and relocated to its current position in 1932. Hijiri Bridge, 79.3 metres long with a 36.3-metre parabolic reinforced-concrete arch over the Kandagawa, was completed in 1927 and stands as both a working bridge and a recognised heritage structure. The new Hijiribashi-guchi concourse opened in December 2023, rounding off over a decade of accessibility improvements. Stand at the centre of Hijiri Bridge and look in either direction: rail trains passing on the viaduct to one side, the subway entrance below, the plateau rising behind, and the twin silhouettes of Yushima Seidō and Nikolai Cathedral in the distance — Tokyo’s infrastructure history compressed into a single view.
