Born the same year as Landmark Tower

July 1993, Minato Mirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama. That single year saw two major towers rise in this newly born waterfront district: the 296-metre Yokohama Landmark Tower, which opened to enormous attention, and — on Block 30, not far away — the Bank of Yokohama Headquarters Building, 28 floors above ground, 152.5 metres tall. Designed by Mitsubishi Estate, the tower crystallised the head-office function of the Bank of Yokohama, the leading regional bank of Kanagawa Prefecture, into a high-rise form on the edge of a harbour that the bank had served for generations.

The structure includes 3 basement floors and 2 penthouse floors, with a low-rise wing alongside the main tower. Its completion in the same month that Minato Mirai’s most emblematic tower debuted means this building belongs to the founding generation of the district’s skyline.

Three decades watching Minato Mirai grow

In 1993, Minato Mirai was still an unfinished canvas — a reclaimed waterfront whose shipyards and dry docks had only recently made way for construction cranes. The Bank of Yokohama Headquarters Building and the Landmark Tower were among the first to establish what that canvas might become. In the three decades since, the district has filled in around them: new office blocks, hotels, and towers such as the Yokohama Symphostage (completed 2024) have joined the skyline. Seen against that history, the bank’s headquarters reads as a founding act — a regional institution staking its presence in a new city centre as it was taking shape.

Summary

The Bank of Yokohama Headquarters Building was completed in July 1993, with 28 floors above ground, 3 below, and a height of 152.5 metres. Designed by Mitsubishi Estate and located on Minato Mirai’s Block 30, it stands as one of the original pillars of a waterfront district that has grown steadily around it for more than thirty years. Walking the area today, the building is a quiet reminder of the ambition that launched Minato Mirai into existence.
