A Skyscraper from the Shipyard’s Own Hands

Minatomirai 3-chome, Nishi Ward, Yokohama. Standing in the core of the Minato Mirai 21 district, not far from Yokohama Landmark Tower, this 33-story office tower rises 151.9 meters above the former shipyard. KDX Yokohama Minatomirai Tower was completed in February 1994, designed and developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as its own Yokohama headquarters. Construction was carried out by a joint venture of Taisei Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, and Shimizu Corporation, using a covered all-weather construction method that was considered advanced at the time.

The ground on which the tower stands was once part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Yokohama Shipyard — the heavy-industrial heart of a city that built itself around manufacturing and the sea. As the Minato Mirai 21 redevelopment gradually replaced the shipyard with a new waterfront district, Mitsubishi moved its Yokohama operations to a building of its own design within the new district.

From Corporate Headquarters to Investment Asset

More than two decades after completion, in March 2017, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries sold the building through Hulic to a fund under the Kenedix Group. A flagship property that had once held the company’s core Yokohama functions became investment real estate — a transition that reflects the broader shift in how Yokohama has evolved from a company town anchored in heavy industry to a diversified urban economy.

On November 1, 2024, the building was renamed from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Yokohama Building to its current name, KDX Yokohama Minatomirai Tower. The Mitsubishi name is gone, but the tower’s place in the Minato Mirai skyline remains unchanged. Seen from the waterfront alongside Landmark Tower and Queen’s Square, it is a fixed element in the view of Yokohama Port.
