Southern Sky Tower Hachioji was completed in November 2010 and stands 157.5 meters tall with 41 floors above ground. The project was led by the Hachioji Station South Exit District Urban Redevelopment Association, with Obayashi Corporation as designer and a joint venture of Obayashi, Tokyu Construction, and Tanaka Construction as contractor.

What makes this tower stand out is the sheer breadth of its program. The 390 residential units share the building with a concert hall and auditorium, a Hachioji City museum, commercial shops, and offices. Layering civic culture alongside housing and commerce in a single tower at a suburban station is unusual even among Japan’s many mixed-use developments.

Remaking the South Exit

Hachioji Station’s south exit had long played second fiddle to the busier north side. The redevelopment project set out to change that, using the new tower and a pedestrian deck network as the anchors for transforming the south exit into a proper urban face for the city. The station-connected walkway now lets visitors reach surrounding facilities without stepping outside — a practical shift that has changed how people move through the area.

Looking down from the upper floors of the tower, the residential neighborhoods of southern Hachioji and the wooded ridgelines of the surrounding hills fill the view.
