A Skyscraper Next Door to Tokyo Dome City

Bunkyo City’s Korakuen district is best known as the home of Tokyo Dome City, where an amusement park and a baseball stadium share a green patch in central Tokyo. On the eastern edge of that cluster, Sumitomo Fudosan Iidabashi First Tower rose in April 2010. The building reaches 149 metres across 34 floors above ground and three below, designed by Nikken Sekkei and constructed by Obayashi Corporation.

The tower’s defining characteristic is its mix of uses. Office floors occupy the lower and middle sections; residential units fill the upper portion. This vertical stacking of workplace and home reflects both the superb transit access of the site — bracketed by Iidabashi Station and Korakuen Station — and the persistent demand for housing that characterises Bunkyo City.

From Redevelopment Site to Urban Landmark

The tower emerged from the Korakucho 2-chome West District First-Class Urban Redevelopment Project, which aimed to replace a low-rise, aging urban fabric with a denser, more resilient block. Sumitomo Realty & Development led the effort as a participating member of the redevelopment association, establishing “First Tower” as the starting point for the company’s expanded presence around Iidabashi.

The redevelopment impulse did not stop there. Iidabashi Grand Bloom followed in 2014 to the southeast, pushing the skyline of the Iidabashi–Korakuen corridor higher still. Within walking distance, Bunkyo Civic Center stands as the administrative heart of the ward. Together these towers have woven a new vertical layer into a district that once ran mostly horizontal.
