GINZA SIX

GINZA SIX opened in April 2017 on the site of the former Matsuzakaya Ginza department store, a 13-storey mixed-use complex reaching approximately 56 metres. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi in collaboration with Kajima, it brings together 241 retail tenants, major office floors, a rooftop garden, and — in its basement — the Kanze Noh Theatre, the home stage of the Kanze school.

A Quiet White Facade on the Ginza Crossing

In Ginza 6-chome, Chuo City, Tokyo, a short walk south from the intersection of Chuo-dori and Harumi-dori, GINZA SIX opened on 20 April 2017. The building rises 13 storeys above ground and descends six storeys below, reaching a height of approximately 56 metres, with a gross floor area of around 148,700 square metres. The exterior — designed by Yoshio Taniguchi of Taniguchi and Associates in collaboration with Kajima Corporation — is defined by a restrained horizontal facade in white, lending a quality of stillness to one of Tokyo’s most commercially intense streets.

The complex occupies the former site of Matsuzakaya’s Ginza store, a landmark retailer whose closure made way for a first-category urban redevelopment project in the Ginza 6-chome 10 district. The project was led by a special purpose company formed by J. Front Retailing (parent of Daimaru Matsuzakaya), Mori Building, and Sumitomo Corporation.

From Department Store to Cultural Complex

What sets GINZA SIX apart from a conventional retail tower is the cultural layer hidden in its lower floors. The basement third level houses the Kanze Noh Theatre — the main stage of the Kanze school, the largest of the five major Noh schools — which relocated here as part of the redevelopment. The juxtaposition of a classical Japanese performing-arts venue and a contemporary luxury retail complex is characteristic of Ginza’s particular capacity to hold tradition and modernity in close proximity. Above the retail floors, office tenants occupy the upper storeys, and a rooftop garden on the 13th floor offers a rare open vantage point over the surrounding neighbourhood.
