An Inverted Pyramid Rising from Ariake

Step off the Yurikamome at Tokyo Big Sight Station and the skyline ahead offers something unexpected: four inverted pyramids locked together, their narrow points anchored close to the ground and their wide, cantilevered masses reaching upward. This is the Conference Tower of Tokyo Big Sight — formally the Tokyo International Exhibition Center — an eight-storey, 58-metre structure that has served as the venue’s signature landmark since its opening in 1996.

The inverted-pyramid form was conceived by AXS SATOW Inc., then known as Satoh Comprehensive Planning, and it remains one of the more arresting geometric statements in Tokyo’s bayfront skyline. Below and around the Conference Tower spread the West Exhibition Hall and the East Exhibition Hall, large-span halls whose interiors are stitched together by an airy glass atrium in the West Hall. The facility opened as part of the broader development of the Tokyo Waterfront City, occupying reclaimed land in Ariake, Koto City.

The 2019 Expansion That Redefined the Venue’s Scale

For much of its early life, Tokyo Big Sight was centred on its original East and West exhibition blocks. In 2019 the venue expanded considerably. The Aomi Exhibition Hall opened in April, followed by the South Exhibition Hall in July. The South Hall is a five-storey building with approximately 20,000 square metres of exhibition area, complementing the capacity of the existing halls and pushing the venue’s total floor area to roughly 317,000 square metres.

Around the same time, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games brought an additional role. Parts of the West Hall were repurposed as the International Broadcast Centre and other Games facilities, with exhibitions temporarily relocated to the Aomi Hall. The venue’s ability to adapt to that scale of demand, while maintaining its identity as a trade-fair hub, reflects how deeply the Tokyo waterfront infrastructure has matured since the 1990s. During major exhibitions, the East, West, and South halls are linked by pedestrian bridges and covered corridors, turning the sprawling site into a single connected floor.
