Twin Towers Born from the Ruins of a Steel Mill

In the Shinonome district of Koto City, on land once occupied by a sprawling Mitsubishi Steel plant, W Comfort Towers was completed between 2004 and 2005. The EAST Tower stands 54 stories above ground with two basement levels, reaching approximately 178 meters, and was completed in October 2004. The WEST Tower followed in February 2005, rising 45 floors to roughly 153 meters. Together the two buildings hold 1,149 residential units, forming the centerpiece of the Shinonome Canal Court redevelopment zone.

Mitsubishi Estate, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Ryoshin Urban Development acquired the former industrial site, with Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei overseeing the design and Toda Corporation handling design-build. The decision to plant two supertall residential towers beside the Shinonome Canal captured the momentum of a bay-side building boom reshaping eastern Tokyo in the early 2000s. As the Shinonome district transitioned from a quiet industrial zone to a residential neighborhood, these two towers played a defining role in that transformation.

A Twin Silhouette on the Waterfront Skyline

The EAST and WEST towers stand close together yet read as a pair, their differing heights creating visual tension. Viewed from the Shinonome Canal bank or from the Tatsumi direction, their contrasting profiles cut a recognizable shape into the waterfront skyline. Nearby, the Shinonome Canal Court CODAN—a public housing project designed by six distinguished architects and completed between 2003 and 2005—occupies an adjacent section of the same redeveloped precinct. Where CODAN explored architectural diversity in mid-rise form under public auspices, W Comfort Towers pursued verticality and scale as private condominiums, layering a different urban character onto the same district.

Walking from Tatsumi Station through Shinonome, low-rise slab blocks and the two supertall towers come into the same frame simultaneously. The twin towers, now standing as quiet landmarks above a transformed cityscape, mark how completely the mill grounds have been remade into a place where people live.
