Two Towers on the Reclaimed Shore

In Toyosu 3-chome, Koto City — a short walk from Toyosu Station, where the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line and the Yurikamome automated guideway meet — a pair of super high-rise towers face each other across a shared podium. City Towers Toyosu The Twin, developed by Sumitomo Realty & Development and designed by Nikken Sekkei, consists of the South Tower and the North Tower, each rising 48 floors above ground with one basement level and standing approximately 166 metres tall. The South Tower was completed in March 2009, the North Tower in June of the same year, and together they provide a total of 1,063 units.

What distinguishes a twin tower from a single tower is not simply arithmetic. Two masses of nearly identical height standing side by side create a different order of presence in the cityscape: they divide the sky between them, cast shadows on each other, and shift their relationship as the sun moves across the day. That particular quality — two towers reading as a single composed statement — defines the view from Toyosu Station’s south exit and makes this one of the most immediately recognisable residential landmarks along Tokyo’s waterfront.

From Industrial Land to Residential District

Toyosu 3-chome was once a flat expanse of factories and warehouses spread across reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay. Through the 2000s, as the waterfront was systematically converted to residential use, this area became one of the primary sites of that transformation. City Towers Toyosu was planned as a multi-tower complex: The Twin (South and North towers) together with a third tower to the north, known as The Symbol. Construction employed the HiRC method, a composite structural system combining high-strength concrete and steel that was widely adopted in super high-rise housing of the same era. The Yurakucho Line running directly below the site connects residents to central Tokyo in minutes, while the elevated Yurikamome offers views out over the bay. This combination — infrastructure, waterfront outlook, and the proximity to major development — brought Toyosu into the front rank of Tokyo residential addresses.
