A 21-Story Luxury Address in Roppongi Hills

Grand Hyatt Tokyo occupies a low-rise wing within the Roppongi Hills mixed-use complex in Minato Ward, Tokyo. It opened on April 25, 2003, alongside the 54-story Mori Tower, a cinema complex, residential towers, and retail podiums that together transformed a 11-hectare hillside in Roppongi. With 387 guestrooms spread across 21 floors, the hotel set a benchmark for room size and suite quality among Tokyo’s luxury properties at the time of its opening.

The architecture of Roppongi Hills, including the hotel wing, was carried out by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the American firm. The hotel stands as a separate low-rise structure from the Mori Tower, positioned to take advantage of the sloped terrain around Roppongi 6-chome. Its dark granite façade and understated massing contrast with the more assertive verticality of the main tower beside it.

The Hotel as Anchor of Urban Regeneration

Roppongi Hills was the product of 17 years of land consolidation and negotiation, and its 2003 opening was widely covered as proof that large-scale urban redevelopment in Tokyo could succeed. Grand Hyatt Tokyo was integral to that story: a hotel of international caliber helped position Roppongi Hills as a destination for both business travelers and leisure visitors, supporting the complex’s retail and cultural programs.

In the two decades since, Roppongi Midtown (2007) and Azabudai Hills (2023) have further layered high-end mixed-use development across the southern half of Minato Ward. Grand Hyatt Tokyo’s 2003 opening now reads as the opening move of that transformation.

Summary

Grand Hyatt Tokyo opened in 2003 with 21 floors and 387 guestrooms as part of the Roppongi Hills complex designed by KPF. It remains one of Tokyo’s most prominent luxury hotels and a landmark of the city’s early twenty-first century urban renewal.

The adjacent Roppongi Hills Mori Tower (54 floors, 238 m) defines the skyline of this corner of Minato Ward. For accommodation in the Roppongi, Akasaka, and Toranomon area, Rakuten Travel offers extensive options.
