A Mixed-Use Tower Born from the Roppongi 3-chome Redevelopment

The Sumitomo Fudosan Roppongi Grand Tower was completed in October 2016, rising 43 floors above ground and two below in the Roppongi 3-chome district of Minato City, Tokyo. At approximately 231 metres, it stands as the centrepiece of a large-scale urban redevelopment project led by the Roppongi 3-chome Eastern Area Urban Redevelopment Association and Sumitomo Realty & Development. The building was designed by Nikken Sekkei and constructed by a joint venture of Taisei Corporation and Obayashi Corporation. A direct underground connection to Roppongi-itchome Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line defines the building’s relationship to its urban context.

The lower and middle floors are given over to offices, while the upper storeys contain the “Roppongi Grand Tower Residence” — a residential component that stacks homes directly above workplaces. This vertical combination of uses within a single tower became a defining pattern of large-scale central-Tokyo development in the 2010s, and this building is a clear representative of that tendency.

Roppongi-itchome and the Layered Hills of Minato City
