Izumi Garden Tower

Completed in 2002 as the centrepiece of the Izumi Garden mixed-use precinct in Roppongi 1-chome, this 45-storey, 201-metre office tower by Nikken Sekkei introduced a garden-integrated, station-direct model of urban redevelopment to one of Tokyo's most established business neighbourhoods.

Gardens Below, 201 Metres Above

Completed in 2002 in the Roppongi 1-chome district of Minato City, Tokyo, Izumi Garden Tower stands 45 storeys above ground and two below, reaching a height of 201 metres. Total floor area is approximately 157,365 square metres. Nikken Sekkei handled the design, and construction was carried out by a joint venture led by Shimizu Corporation, with Konoike Construction, Asanuma Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Takenaka Corporation, and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction also participating.

The tower connects underground directly to Roppongi-itchome Station. Above ground it anchors the Izumi Garden precinct — a mixed programme of residences, an event hall, and retail arranged around a landscaped garden at the foot of the office tower. Despite the presence of a 201-metre skyscraper, the arrival sequence from the station is calm: a garden walk that serves as an unusually quiet introduction to a very tall building.

Fourteen Years from Plan to Completion

The site of Izumi Garden formerly held the Sumitomo Kaikan hall, the Sumitomo Azabu Heights apartments, and various smaller residential structures. Sumitomo Realty & Development joined the Roppongi 1-chome West District Urban Redevelopment project in 1988, and the entire Izumi Garden complex was completed approximately 14 years later, after extended negotiations with existing landowners and residents.

The development gave Roppongi 1-chome a major business and residential hub alongside Ark Hills, which had been completed in 1986 just minutes away on the same ridge. The hilltop location connects on foot to the Kamiyacho and Toranomon districts to the north, and the precinct’s garden-centred layout has given it a character distinct from the denser redevelopment found elsewhere in Minato City.

Summary

Izumi Garden Tower was completed in 2002 with 45 floors above ground and a height of 201 metres. Designed by Nikken Sekkei and delivered through Sumitomo Realty & Development’s 14-year urban redevelopment programme, it pairs station-direct access with a garden precinct that softens the scale of one of Tokyo’s taller office towers. Walking out of Roppongi-itchome Station and into the Izumi Garden greenery offers a gentle re-entry to the city — a good reason to explore the neighbourhood on foot.
