Fifty Years in the Making

The Kita-Osaka Kyuko Railway opened in 1970 to serve the Osaka Expo, threading through the Senri New Town housing developments and connecting to Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line for direct service into central Osaka. Senri-Chuo had been the northern terminus ever since, but Minoh City’s long-standing request for an extension was finally realised on 23 March 2024, when two new stations — Minoh Sembahama Handai-Mae and Minoh Kayano — opened, extending the line by 2.5 km. The construction cost was approximately ¥40 billion. The project had faced several delays over the years before reaching this milestone.

Because Kita-Osaka Kyuko runs through-service with the Midosuji Line, passengers at the new Minoh Kayano terminus can now reach Umeda Station in central Osaka without changing trains, a journey of around 30 minutes. This direct link transformed commuting times across the Hokusetsu suburban corridor and immediately energised the local property market.

A University Station Reshapes Its Neighbourhood

The intermediate new station, Minoh Sembahama Handai-Mae, takes its name from Osaka University’s School of Foreign Studies, whose campus relocated to an adjacent site in 2021 from Toyonaka. The station-campus adjacency has significantly improved daily commutes for students and faculty. The surrounding Semba district, a historic commercial and cultural quarter in Minoh City, has attracted fresh attention from developers and retailers since the line opened, with multiple redevelopment plans in motion. Around Minoh Kayano Station, the city has been reshaping its station plaza and street grid, with the area gradually emerging as the northernmost anchor of the Hokusetsu urban network.

Summary

The Kita-Osaka Kyuko extension opened on 23 March 2024, adding two stations and 2.5 km of track at a cost of approximately ¥40 billion. A no-transfer, roughly 30-minute connection to Umeda is now available from Minoh’s new stations, fundamentally changing how residents in Osaka’s northern suburbs navigate their daily lives. After half a century of waiting, the extension signals that the edge of the Osaka city-region is still expanding northward.
