A Marunouchi Address on the Yaesu Side

Its address reads Marunouchi 1-chome, yet the main entrance faces the Nihombashi Exit of Tokyo Station — the Yaesu side. This geographic nuance gives Marunouchi Trust City its distinctive character among the towers clustered around the station. The complex developed by Mori Trust consists of two buildings: Trust Tower N, completed in September 2003 as a 19-story, 3-basement structure reaching approximately 99.6 meters, and the Main Tower, completed in December 2008 as a 37-story, 4-basement skyscraper standing 178 meters tall. The Main Tower was designed by Yasui Architects & Engineers, Morimura Sekkei, and Toda Corporation.

The Nihombashi Exit side of Tokyo Station has historically carried a more commercial, mercantile character than the ceremonial western facade — adjacent to the trading district of Nihombashi, where goods and capital have circulated since the Edo period. Placing a luxury tower on this side of the station reflects the way the redevelopment of the broader Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho area had, by the 2000s, extended its ambition to every face of the station.

A Luxury Hotel at the Top of the City

Floors 27 through 37 of the Main Tower are occupied by Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo, the flagship Japanese property of the Hong Kong-based luxury hospitality group, which opened in 2009. Its placement in the uppermost portion of a prime office tower follows a model that became a recurring feature of Tokyo’s major redevelopments: stacking a high-end hotel atop a commercial and office base to maximize return from a prominent address. The same template appears at Toranomon Hills and elsewhere across the city.

The name Marunouchi Trust City deliberately claims the Marunouchi identity for a location that sits at the boundary between two very different faces of the station. It is a reminder that in Tokyo’s densest business districts, addresses and neighborhoods overlap, bleed into one another, and resist neat categorization.
