The Gate Tower Facing Kansai International Airport

Just steps from Rinku Town Station in Izumisano, Osaka, a 56-story tower rises 256 meters into the sky. This is SiS Rinku Tower — known until October 2019 as the Rinku Gate Tower Building — which upon completion in August 1996 was the tallest building in western Japan.

The building was conceived as one wing of a “twin gate” framing the approach to Kansai International Airport, with a matching tower intended for the opposite side. That second tower was never realized. The single tower that stands today still commands the Rinku Town skyline and serves as the symbolic entrance to the airport gateway area.

Designed by a joint venture of Nikken Sekkei and Yasui Architects & Engineers, the building has a total floor area of approximately 102,900 m² and stacks hotel, office, and international conference facilities in a single vertical composition. It connects directly to Rinku Town Station, served by both the JR Kansai Airport Line and the Nankai Airport Line.

A Bubble-Era Vision Realized in 1996

The project’s origins reach back to the late 1980s. As construction of Kansai International Airport accelerated, a plan emerged to develop Rinku Town on the reclaimed land in Izumisano — an international city on the airport’s doorstep. Construction of the tower began in August 1992 and reached completion in August 1996, two years after KIX opened for business.

The building has been through its share of difficult periods following the end of Japan’s economic bubble, but it has endured as the most recognizable landmark in the area. After the 2019 rename to SiS Rinku Tower, it continues its role as a hotel, office, and convention venue at the edge of Osaka Bay.

From the upper floors, looking toward the sea, the airport’s terminal buildings come into view beyond the long arc of the bridge. At night, when the terminal lights trace the outline of the bridge against the darkness, the building’s original intention as a gateway — literally a “gate tower” — is easy to feel.

Summary

SiS Rinku Tower was completed in August 1996, with 56 floors above ground, 2 below, and a height of 256 meters. Designed by Nikken Sekkei and Yasui Architects & Engineers, it stands directly connected to Rinku Town Station, facing Kansai International Airport across the bay. Formerly the Rinku Gate Tower Building, it was renamed in 2019 but remains Rinku Town’s most distinctive landmark. If you pass through on the way to or from KIX, look up at this tower before you cross the bridge.
