Sakae’s Answer to Meieki

Nagoya has long been defined by two rival urban cores: Meieki, the area clustered around Nagoya Station to the west, and Sakae, the city’s shopping and entertainment center roughly two kilometers to the east. From the early 2000s onward, Meieki accumulated a string of supertall office towers; Sakae, while remaining the city’s cultural and commercial heart, had no comparable vertical statement. In March 2026, that changed. The Landmark Nagoya Sakae — 41 floors above ground, 4 below, 211.7 meters — was completed directly above Sakae Station, becoming the tallest building in the Sakae district.

The building stands at 3-25-1 Nishiki, Naka-ku, Nagoya. Its site connects directly to the Higashiyama and Meijō lines’ Sakae Station, giving it the same subway-integrated access that had been one of Meieki’s competitive strengths. Gross floor area reaches approximately 109,000 square meters. Design was a joint commission to Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and Takenaka Corporation, who also served as general contractor; groundbreaking took place in July 2022.

Stacked Uses, Stacked Energy

The building’s program is deliberately layered. Retail floors and a cinema complex occupy the lower levels, office floors stack through the middle, and the Conrad Nagoya occupies the hotel floors near the top. Threading retail shoppers, cinema-goers, office workers, and hotel guests through a single structure at different times of day is a calculated way to sustain energy in a building whose many functions reinforce one another.

Development was led by Mitsubishi Estate and joined by J.Front Urban Development, Japan Post Real Estate, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, and Chunichi Shimbun. Chunichi Shimbun — the regional newspaper deeply rooted in the Chubu area — brings a local dimension to a consortium otherwise dominated by Tokyo-based investors. The retail and cinema floors opened on June 11, 2026.
