A 46-storey mixed-use tower completed in 2017 and rising 220 metres above Nagoya Station's west exit. Developed by JR Central, it combines retail, a hotel, offices and a bus terminal in a single tower — the west-side counterpart to the JR Central Towers across the tracks.

Nagoya Station’s Second Supertall, Rising from the West Exit

JR Gate Tower opened fully in April 2017 on the west (Taikodori) side of Nagoya Station, developed by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central). The building stands 46 floors above ground and six below, reaching 220 metres with a total floor area of approximately 260,000 square metres. Its office floors opened ahead of schedule in November 2016, with retail and the hotel completing the tower the following spring.

The programme is layered vertically: retail occupies the lower floors, offices fill the middle and upper-middle sections, and the Nagoya JR Gate Tower Hotel takes the uppermost floors. Below ground, a bus terminal anchors the building to the regional transport network. A direct connection into Nagoya Station’s concourse ties the building to Shinkansen, conventional rail, and Nagoya Municipal Subway lines, making it a genuine multi-modal interchange as much as it is an office building. The design was led by a joint venture of Nikken Sekkei, JR Tokai Consultants, and Taisei Corporation; construction was carried out by a joint venture of Taisei Corporation and Kajima Corporation.

Facing the Central Towers Across the Tracks

JR Gate Tower cannot be understood without its relationship to the JR Central Towers (completed 1999), which rise on the east (Sakuradori) side of Nagoya Station. Where the Central Towers defined the station’s east skyline, the Gate Tower claims the west — and together the two supertalls frame Nagoya Station from opposite sides, forming the symmetrical gateway silhouette that now defines the Meieki district.

The supertall cluster around Nagoya Station began with the Central Towers and continued through Midland Square (2007) and JP Tower Nagoya (2015) before reaching this building. The Gate Tower’s arrival in 2017 completed a generation of high-rise development directly linked to the station box — a model of city-building anchored squarely on rail infrastructure.
