An Archaic Name on a New Tower

Meieki 3-chome, Nakamura Ward, Nagoya. Northeast of JR Nagoya Station, where the dense cluster of offices and retail spills outward from the concourse, stands the Dainagoya Building. Completed on 31 October 2015, the tower rises 34 stories above ground with four basement levels, reaching a height of 174.7 metres. Mitsubishi Estate handled both development and design through its in-house design arm, Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei.

The name Dainagoya Building — written with the old-fashioned kana character “ヂング” rather than the modern “ジング” — was carried forward from the first-generation building that stood on the same site from 1965 until its demolition in 2012. The original was a twelve-storey, 41-metre structure that served as one of the reference points of the Meieki area during the postwar decades. Its replacement required nearly three years of construction; the office floors opened in November 2015 and the full complex, including ground-level retail, opened in March 2016.

Rebuilding While Remembering

Retaining the archaic spelling was a deliberate choice. The slightly antique character in the name signals continuity with the building’s fifty-year predecessor and the era it represented — a way of anchoring the new tower in local memory rather than treating the site as a blank slate. In a station district that had seen successive waves of large-scale development since the late 1990s, the gesture gave the rebuilt Dainagoya a distinct identity among its taller and newer neighbours.

The lower floors, from the basement up to the third floor, contain commercial tenants that open directly toward the pedestrian routes connecting to Nagoya Station. The upper floors house standard office floors with efficient floor plates. The total floor area of approximately 147,000 square metres is roughly twice that of the original building. At 174.7 metres, the tower falls between the taller landmarks of Midland Square and JR Gate Tower, occupying a mid-tier position in the Meieki skyline while sitting closer to the station’s northern approach.
