JR Gate Tower

A 46-storey, approximately 211-metre mixed-use tower completed in 2017 at the Sakura-dori exit of Nagoya Station. Developed by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), it stacks commercial floors, a hotel, and offices above the station concourse, adding a second skyline marker to a station already defined by the twin JR Central Towers completed in 1999.

A Second Tower on the East Side

At the Sakura-dori (east) exit of Nagoya Station in Nakamura Ward, JR Gate Tower opened fully in April 2017. The building rises 46 storeys to a height of approximately 211 metres, developed by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central).

Nagoya Station had already acquired its twin high-rise profile in 1999 with the JR Central Towers — an office tower of approximately 226 metres (51 storeys) and a hotel tower of approximately 245 metres (53 storeys) — both rising above the Taiko-dori (west) exit. JR Gate Tower, standing on the opposite, east side of the station, completed a new framing of one of Japan’s busiest rail hubs. The building connects directly to the station concourse, placing its commercial floors, hotel, and upper-level office tenants within immediate reach of the platform level.

A Stacked Programme above the Station

The lower floors of JR Gate Tower house retail tenants that capitalise on the station’s foot traffic. Hotel accommodation occupies the mid-section, while the upper office floors offer sweeping views over Nagoya Castle, the Nobi Plain, and on clear days, Mount Ibuki to the north-east. The 46-storey height places the building among the tallest structures in Nagoya, behind the JR Central Towers and in the same tier as the city’s other major office developments.

Nagoya’s economic significance — as the hub of Japan’s automotive industry and a future stop on the Linear Chuo Shinkansen maglev line — ensures continued development pressure around the station. JR Gate Tower, completed ahead of those anticipated transformations, strengthened the case for the station precinct as a primary destination for both business and commercial traffic.

Summary

JR Gate Tower was completed in 2017 as a 46-storey, approximately 211-metre mixed-use complex at Nagoya Station’s east exit. Developed by JR Central, it extends the station’s skyline into its eastern precinct and brings a hotel and office destination directly above the platforms. Walking between the JR Central Towers to the west and JR Gate Tower to the east gives a sense of how this node has consolidated its urban mass across two decades of development.
