A Post Office Reborn as a Skyscraper

Meieki 1-chome, Nakamura Ward, Nagoya — immediately south of JR Nagoya Station, a 40-story, 195-metre office tower opened in 2015: JP Tower Nagoya. Developed by Japan Post and designed by Nihon Sekkei, the building reaches 195.74 metres at its structural peak. The site was previously occupied by the Nagoya Central Post Office, a building constructed in 1937 that served as the city’s postal and communications hub for more than seven decades. Completing this tower marked the end of the post office era on one of the most valuable pieces of land in central Japan.

The lower floors house KITTE Nagoya, a retail and dining complex that follows the template established by KITTE at JP Tower in Marunouchi, Tokyo: a commercial gallery that references the postal identity of the site while presenting a contemporary retail experience. The name “KITTE” is a double reading — the Japanese word for postage stamp (切手) and the romaji abbreviation of the developer, Japan Post Real Estate.

Nagoya Station’s Growing Skyline

Nagoya Station has been the engine of central Nagoya’s high-rise development since the late 1990s. JR Central Towers set the template in 1999 with twin towers of 245 m and 226 m directly above the station concourses, followed by Midland Square in 2007 (247 m) and JR Gate Tower in 2016 (220 m). JP Tower Nagoya, at 195 m, joins this family as the Japan Post Group’s contribution to the station-front skyline — and as a statement that the postal privatisation programme extended to real estate as well as logistics.

The building’s location — station-adjacent without being directly station-integrated — gives it a slightly different character from the JR-owned towers. Pedestrians moving south from the Shinkansen entrance pass the tower at street level, and the KITTE Nagoya atrium creates a pause in the urban sequence that the pure-office towers do not.
