Nakanoshima, Kita Ward, Osaka — a narrow island cradled between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. In December 2004, a 41-story, 195-metre skyscraper completed here: the Kanden Building. Developed by Kanden Real Estate Development, a subsidiary of Kansai Electric Power, and designed by Nikken Sekkei and Newjec, the building rises to a total height of approximately 195.45 metres. It serves as the headquarters of the Kansai Electric Power Group, one of Japan’s largest regional utilities.

Nakanoshima has long been Osaka’s civic and financial core. The eastern end of the island holds City Hall and landmarks such as the Central Public Hall and the City Library — all built during the Meiji and Taisho eras. The western portion where the Kanden Building stands has been home to energy and financial industry headquarters since the early twentieth century.
