Osaka’s Tallest Tower in Fukushima Ward
Hotarumachi, on the south bank of the Dojima River in Osaka’s Fukushima Ward, began its transformation in the early 2000s when the buildings of the former Osaka University Hospital were cleared from a large waterfront site. The Tower Osaka, completed in April 2008, was the centrepiece of that transformation. At 50 floors above ground and 177 m, it holds the distinction of being the tallest structure in Fukushima Ward. The development was a joint effort by Orix Estate, Mitsubishi Estate, Sumitomo Corporation, KEPCO Estate, and Keihan Railway Estate, with Takenaka Corporation handling both design and construction.
Waterfront Living Above Dojima Crosswalk
The lower floors of The Tower Osaka open into a commercial complex called Dojima Crosswalk, which holds restaurants, cafés, and retail spaces facing the riverfront promenade. Next to the residential tower, Asahi Broadcasting Corporation moved its headquarters studios to Hotarumachi in the same period, giving the district a visible media presence alongside its residential population.
The riverside setting is central to the appeal of the development. A wide promenade runs along the Dojima River in front of the tower complex, and from the upper floors the panorama sweeps across Nakanoshima and the office clusters of Osaka’s Kita Ward. At 50 storeys, the building stood among the tallest in Osaka at the time of its completion, reflecting the scale of residential ambitions in the city during the mid-2000s.
Summary
The Tower Osaka, completed in April 2008, rises 50 floors and 177 m above Fukushima Ward, making it the ward’s tallest building. Developed by a five-company consortium and designed by Takenaka Corporation, it anchors the Hotarumachi waterfront district alongside Asahi Broadcasting’s studios and a riverfront commercial level. The best way to appreciate its setting is to walk the Dojima River promenade from Nakanoshima, where the tower appears framed by water on three sides.
