Breeze Tower

Completed in July 2008, Breeze Tower rises 34 storeys to 167 metres on the western edge of Umeda in Osaka. Designed by Christoph Ingenhoven Architects with Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei as executive architect, the tower features a double-skin glass facade and houses the theatre venue Breeze Breeze in its lower floors.

A European Hand in Osaka’s Skyline

In Umeda 2-chome, Kita Ward, at the point where Yotsubashi-suji and Sonezaki-dori intersect on the western fringe of Umeda, Breeze Tower completed in July 2008. The 34-storey tower, which reaches 167 metres at rooftop level, was developed by Sankei Building and Shimazu Shokai, with executive design and supervision by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and design architecture by Christoph Ingenhoven Architects, a firm based in Düsseldorf, Germany. Total floor area is approximately 85,000 square metres.

The building’s most visible design feature is its double-skin facade — a layer of glass standing apart from the main building envelope. Beyond its visual effect, the double skin reduces solar heat gain, improves the thermal performance of the tower, and allows the interior to maintain high floor-to-ceiling transparency without excessive energy costs. A rooftop greening scheme and solar power generation system complete the environmental agenda that defines the building’s identity. When it opened in 2008, this combination of performance and appearance placed Breeze Tower among the more environmentally ambitious high-rises in Osaka.

A Theatre at the Base of an Office Tower

Breeze Tower’s other defining characteristic is the theatre and event space branded Breeze Breeze, built into the lower floors of the complex. A proper performance venue integrated into a commercial high-rise is uncommon, and it gave the tower a cultural anchor that extended its appeal well beyond office tenants. This programming decision anticipated, by several years, the broader move in Osaka’s Umeda developments toward mixing cultural and business functions in single structures — a pattern that would become more explicit when Grand Front Osaka opened in 2013 with Knowledge Capital at its core.

Positioned a short walk west of the busiest part of Umeda, Breeze Tower occupies a quieter position in the district’s geography, offering tenants a degree of calm while remaining within easy reach of the station network.
