The Knowledge Complex North of Osaka Station
Directly north of JR Osaka Station, in the Daitacho district of Kita Ward, Osaka, a large mixed-use development opened in April 2013. Grand Front Osaka occupies two zones — a South Building and a North Building — with three towers in total. Tower A in the South Building is the tallest, reaching 38 storeys above ground and 179.5 metres in height. Tower B in the North Building also stands at 38 storeys and approximately 175 metres, while Tower C — home to the InterContinental Osaka Hotel — rises to 33 storeys and 154 metres. Together, the three towers form a contiguous district linked by elevated walkways that extend directly from the station’s north concourse, creating a new northern edge to the Umeda commercial zone.
The project brought together a consortium of developers — Mitsubishi Estate, NTT Urban Development, Sekisui House, Hankyu Corporation and others — with Nikken Sekkei, Mitsubishi Jisho Design and NTT Facilities sharing design responsibilities across the different blocks. Building a coherent district through multi-party collaboration, rather than through a single developer’s master plan, was itself one of the more distinctive features of the scheme.
From Freight Yard to Innovation Hub: Umekita Phase One
The site on which Grand Front Osaka stands was for many years occupied by the Umeda Freight Terminal, a working rail yard hidden just behind one of Japan’s busiest urban stations. Under a government-led urban regeneration framework, the site was earmarked for transformation into a new city district — an initiative known as “Umekita.” Grand Front Osaka became the first phase of that broader plan.
What set the project apart from a conventional retail or office complex was the inclusion of Knowledge Capital, a facility built into the lower floors of the North Building. Designed to bring corporations, universities and research institutions together under one roof, it offered laboratories, event spaces and collaborative zones with the aim of seeding new industries through deliberate proximity. The concept framed Grand Front Osaka not simply as a building but as a prototype for an urban knowledge district — a reading reinforced by the elevated walkway system that draws visitors from the station through the complex and significantly enhances pedestrian circulation across the wider Umeda area.
Summary
Grand Front Osaka opened in 2013 as a three-tower complex on the Umekita first-phase development site north of JR Osaka Station. Tower A (South Building) reaches 38 storeys and 179.5 metres; Tower B (North Building) stands at 38 storeys and approximately 175 metres; Tower C, home to the InterContinental Osaka Hotel, rises to 33 storeys and 154 metres. Knowledge Capital at the complex’s heart set an innovation agenda that continues in the adjacent Umekita second-phase development now underway nearby.
For accommodation in Umeda — including the InterContinental Osaka in Tower C — Rakuten Travel offers a wide selection of nearby hotels.
