A 55-Storey Tower on Nakanoshima’s Western End

Nakanoshima — the long, narrow island formed by the Dojima River to the north and the Tosabori River to the south — stretches westward from Osaka’s civic and cultural core. At its western end, in Nakanoshima 6-chome, The Parkhouse Nakanoshima Tower was completed in October 2017. The tower rises 55 storeys to a height of 192.93 metres, making it one of the tallest residential buildings in the Osaka metropolitan area. Takenaka Corporation acted as both designer and contractor, incorporating a base-isolation system into the structure. The total floor area is approximately 99,957 square metres, with 894 homes distributed across the upper floors.

The project was jointly developed by four companies: Mitsubishi Estate Residence, Sumitomo Corporation, Keihan Electric Railway Real Estate, and Asahi Properties. Nakanoshima’s western reaches had historically been dominated by industrial and warehouse use; this development was part of a gradual shift toward housing and cultural facilities that has characterised the island over the past two decades.

The Water City’s Changing Skyline

From the upper floors of the tower, the view takes in both arms of the river, the green spine of Nakanoshima Park, and — on a clear day — the distant ridgelines of the Rokko Mountains. The view eastward back toward Osaka’s centre reveals the contrast between the island’s Meiji and Taisho-era public buildings — the Central Public Hall, the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library — and the newer towers rising around them. The Parkhouse Nakanoshima Tower, standing alongside the Nakanoshima Festival Tower complex, is a significant presence in this recomposed skyline.

At street level, landscaped walkways and water-facing terraces connect the tower’s base to the riverbank. The approach to the building follows the Tosabori River on one side and a tree-lined path on the other, offering a different experience of the island’s layered history at each step.

Summary

The Parkhouse Nakanoshima Tower is a 55-storey, 192-metre residential tower on Nakanoshima Island in Kita Ward, Osaka, completed in October 2017. Designed and built by Takenaka Corporation with seismic isolation, and jointly developed by four companies, its 894 homes occupy one of Osaka’s most historically charged urban settings. Walking the riverside paths of Nakanoshima and looking up at this tower rising beyond the century-old civic buildings is one of the more striking architectural experiences the city offers.
