An Office Tower Atop a Department Store

Kadota-cho, Kita Ward, Osaka — above the concourses of Hankyu Umeda Station, a 186-metre office tower commands the northern skyline of central Osaka. Osaka Umeda Twin Towers North was completed on 21 November 2012. Designed by Nikken Sekkei and built by Obayashi Corporation, the 41-story, three-basement-level building was developed by Hankyu Electric Railway and Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores. Its distinguishing feature is the Hankyu Umeda Main Store occupying the lower floors — a department store rebuilt as part of the same project.

The original Umeda Hankyu Building opened in 1920 and became synonymous with Osaka’s commercial heart over more than eight decades. Rebuilding it while keeping the store trading demanded an incremental phasing that took nearly a decade from start to finish. From 2004 onwards, a section of central Umeda was enclosed in scaffolding and hoarding for years, as the old structure came down floor by floor and the new one rose in stages. The tower portion was completed in 2012, giving the reborn department store an office skyscraper as its crown.

The Twin That Shapes Umeda’s Centre

The “Twin Towers” in the name reflects a deliberate pairing with Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South (formerly Hankyu Grand Building) across the department store to the south. Nikken Sekkei unified the architectural language of both towers so that they read as a coherent district pair framing the Hankyu Umeda store. The heights differ, but the formal consistency binds them.

Umeda is the densest node of private railway infrastructure in western Japan, with Hankyu, Hanshin, Osaka Metro, and JR all converging within walking distance. The completion of this tower added a transit-integrated office address at the precise geographic centre of that network, complementing the slightly later Grand Front Osaka development that transformed the former rail yards just to the north.
