Three Towers on the Konan Waterfront

In Konan 4-chome, Minato City — a short walk from the eastern exit of Shinagawa Station — the three towers of World City Towers form one of the largest residential complexes in central Tokyo. The Aqua Tower (Block A, 41 storeys) was completed in March 2006, followed by the Capital Tower (Block C, 42 storeys) and the Breeze Tower (Block B, 43 storeys), both completed in February 2007. Together, the three towers house 2,090 homes and contain a total floor area of approximately 291,000 square metres. The highest point of the complex reaches 139.85 metres. Sumitomo Realty & Development handled development and sales, while Nikken Sekkei — with Tomohiko Yamanashi as lead architect — designed the project.

Shinagawa’s Transformation in Steel and Concrete

The Konan waterfront underwent rapid change from the late 1990s onward. The opening of the Shinkansen at Shinagawa Station in 2003, combined with large-scale office development at Shinagawa Intercity and Shinagawa Grand Commons, drew investment into what had been a zone of warehouses and light industry. World City Towers arrived in the middle of this transformation, bringing a concentration of 2,090 homes to a district that had previously housed relatively few residents.

The three towers share a family resemblance but differ in floor plan and facade detail, avoiding the visual monotony that can afflict large residential blocks. Views from the upper floors range across Tokyo Bay, the port of Tokyo, and the night skyline of the central city — one of the factors that established the Konan waterfront as a desirable residential address during the 2000s building cycle.

Summary

World City Towers, completed between 2006 and 2007, comprises three residential towers of 41 to 43 storeys in Konan 4-chome, Minato City. Developed by Sumitomo Realty and designed by Nikken Sekkei, the 2,090-unit complex brought a new scale of waterfront living to the Shinagawa area. Walking the Konan neighbourhood today, the three towers serve as landmarks for a stretch of Tokyo that has changed almost entirely within living memory.
