An Unusual Art Center on the Roppongi Hillside

Step out of Nogizaka Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and a massive wave of glass appears directly ahead. This is the National Art Center, Tokyo — Japan’s largest national art museum. It opened on January 21, 2007, having completed construction in May 2006 on a site in Roppongi, Minato Ward. The building was designed by Kisho Kurokawa together with Nihon Sekkei and occupies a total floor area of 49,834 square meters.

The most striking feature is the three-dimensionally curved glass curtain wall that envelops the exterior. Its soft, flowing shape stands in sharp contrast to the rectilinear high-rises nearby, announcing before you even enter that this is no ordinary building. Inside, the atrium rising across the first and second floors is anchored by inverted-cone concrete columns housing a restaurant at their base. Kurokawa died in April 2007, just months after the museum opened, making this his final major work.

The site has historical depth as well: it was formerly the barracks of the Third Infantry Regiment of the Imperial Japanese Army, later used by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. One section of the old regimental barracks still stands as an annex on the grounds.

Exhibition-Only: A Different Kind of National Museum

What sets the National Art Center apart from conventional museums is that it holds no permanent collection. Rather than acquiring and displaying artworks, it was conceived as an “art center” dedicated entirely to hosting temporary exhibitions and providing information about art. This model allows the museum’s vast exhibition galleries to be used at full capacity year-round, with multiple large-scale shows often running simultaneously.

Roppongi is also home to Roppongi Hills Mori Tower to the south and Tokyo Midtown Tower to the northeast. Together these three venues form what is known as the Roppongi Art Triangle, a walkable cultural cluster that draws visitors from across the city and around the world. In October 2018, cumulative attendance at the National Art Center surpassed 30 million visitors.

Summary

The National Art Center, Tokyo was completed in 2006 and opened in January 2007 — four floors above ground and one below, approximately 32 meters tall, with 49,834 square meters of floor area. Kisho Kurokawa’s undulating glass facade stands out along the Roppongi streetscape, and the museum’s exhibition-only operating model offered a new template for national art institutions in Japan. Direct access from Nogizaka Station makes it easy to visit, and on weekends the building draws a steady stream of art lovers and tourists alike.
