A Glass Tower Rising from Shiba Park
Walking toward Tokyo Tower along the paths of Shiba Park, a sleek glass tower appears between the trees just beyond the grounds of Zojoji Temple. This is The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, a 33-story hotel standing 104.40 metres tall in Shiba-koen, Minato City. The building opened in April 2005 and sits directly beside the green expanse of Tokyo Metropolitan Shiba Park, one of the few large hotel towers in central Tokyo with such immediate proximity to open nature. From the guest rooms, visitors can look out over the tree canopy and take in the full silhouette of Tokyo Tower rising above the temple rooftops.
The exterior is a straightforward glass curtain-wall shaft, its profile tapering slightly as it rises. The restrained volume was a deliberate choice, allowing the tower to coexist with the park’s trees rather than dominate the historic landscape. At night the illuminated floors layer quietly against Tokyo Tower’s glow, creating a distinctive depth to the skyline.
Ken’o Tange’s Quiet Architecture
The building was designed by Ken’o Tange of Tange Associates. Where his father, Kenzo Tange, became famous for sculptural forms — Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings, the Yoyogi National Gymnasium — the son’s work tends toward restraint, prioritising harmony with the surroundings over formal statement. In the context of Shiba Park’s centuries-old green fabric, that approach translated into glass transparency and clean vertical lines.
Construction was carried out by Kajima Corporation. The interiors were designed by Murano Mori Architects, creating a spatial richness inside that contrasts pleasantly with the composed exterior. The hotel comprises 603 guest rooms, with the porte-cochère facing toward Zojoji Temple’s black gate, a subtle acknowledgment of the historic setting.
Summary
The Prince Park Tower Tokyo opened in 2005 as a 33-story, 104-metre hotel standing at the edge of Shiba Park. Ken’o Tange’s quiet glass tower holds its own between the weight of Tokyo Tower and the history of Zojoji Temple without trying to outshine either. Visiting the area alongside Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Port City Takeshiba reveals the layered accumulation of Minato City’s modern architecture — a worthwhile walk for anyone curious about how Tokyo’s skyline evolved one building at a time.
