A Tower on Takanawa’s Gentle Ridge

Takanawa The Residence (高輪ザ・レジデンス) was completed in October 2005 in Takanawa 1-chome, Minato City, Tokyo. The tower block rises 47 storeys above ground with a single basement level, on a site exceeding 9,000 square metres along Sakurada-dori — the main arterial road connecting Shinagawa to Kasumigaseki. The project was developed by Tokyo Tatemono, designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, and constructed by Taisei Corporation. The complex includes a low-rise terrace block alongside the main tower.

Takanawa sits on a plateau that runs south from the Sengakuji area toward Shinagawa, a ridge that has been a residential quarter since the Edo period. This setting gives the neighbourhood a quieter identity than much of Minato City — a quality that persists even as the area around Takanawa Gateway City, to the north, undergoes large-scale transformation. When Takanawa The Residence was completed in 2005, it was among the first significant tall residential buildings on this stretch of Sakurada-dori, and its silhouette has shaped the local skyline for two decades.

Meiji Gakuin University’s Shirokanedai campus is directly across the street from the tower, an unusual pairing that reflects the mixed character of the Takanawa neighbourhood. The tower records what Takanawa looked like before the current wave of redevelopment swept through, and walking from Sengakuji or Shinagawa Station toward the building makes it easy to see how the street-level scale has shifted around a building that has not moved at all.
