A New Tower Leading Hamamatsucho’s Transformation

The World Trade Center Building South Tower was completed in March 2021 in Hamamatsucho, Minato City, Tokyo. Rising 39 floors above ground — with three basement levels — and reaching approximately 197 metres, it was conceived as a leading project ahead of the planned demolition and reconstruction of the neighbouring main building. Basic design was handled by Nikken Sekkei, with detailed design and construction by Kajima Corporation. The project was jointly developed by World Trade Center Building Co., Tokyo Monorail Co., and Kajima Corporation, with a total floor area of approximately 95,000 square metres.

The name “South Tower” reflects the building’s relationship with its predecessor. The original World Trade Center Building — the main tower — was completed in 1970 and stood for decades as one of Hamamatsucho’s most recognisable landmarks. The South Tower was planned as the first step in renewing that site: a new structure rising close by while the older building was still standing, establishing the infrastructure for a phased redevelopment of the entire western precinct.

Hamamatsucho is one of Tokyo’s busiest transit junctions. The JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines share the station with the Tokyo Monorail — which provides direct access to Haneda Airport — and the Toei Asakusa and Oedo subway lines also serve the area. The South Tower’s direct link to the Monorail terminal gives it a distinctly international character as a business address.

A Waterfront Precinct in Motion

Since the South Tower’s completion, demolition of the old main building has advanced and construction on its replacement is under way. The cycle of demolition and rebuild around Hamamatsucho Station’s west exit continues, making this one of Tokyo’s most actively transforming urban sites in the mid-2020s.

The neighbourhood shares a broader context with the Takeshiba and Shibaura waterfronts — a stretch of Minato City’s bay-facing edge that has seen successive development projects emerge in recent years. From the plaza around the South Tower, the closeness to the water and the skyline taking shape across the precinct is tangible.

Summary

The World Trade Center Building South Tower was completed in 2021 with 39 floors and a height of approximately 197 metres. As the lead development in a phased reconstruction that will eventually replace the 1970 main building, it bridges decades of urban history with a programme built around today’s international business environment. The Tokyo Monorail link to Haneda remains one of the most direct airport connections in central Tokyo — arriving here is a good starting point for exploring a neighbourhood very much in mid-transformation.
