Tokyo’s Most Storied Address

Step out of Nijubashimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and two landscapes meet at once: the lush greenery of the Imperial Palace Outer Garden on one side and the linear glass towers of Marunouchi’s business district on the other. Standing at that boundary is Palace Hotel Tokyo. Its address — 1-1-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward — is about as close to the center of the city as a building can get. Completed in May 2012, the hotel is 23 floors above ground and 4 below, reaching a height of 114.9 meters. Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei handled the design; Obayashi Corporation built it.

This site has housed a luxury hotel since 1961, when the original Palace Hotel opened in a building designed by architect Yoshiro Taniguchi. By the 2000s, the aging structure required replacement. The hotel closed in January 2006, demolition followed that year, and the current building completed in May 2012 and opened in July 2012. The new building has a total floor area of approximately 94,100 square meters.

The exterior uses white aluminum panels and a glass curtain wall whose horizontal lines echo the low, horizontal tree canopy of the Imperial Palace Outer Garden — a deliberate gesture of architectural dialogue with the landscape it faces. The 290 guest rooms, along with the top-floor dining rooms, offer direct views over the palace grounds.

What the Address Means

The address 1-1-1 Marunouchi sits on land that was once the third bailey of Edo Castle and later incorporated into modern Tokyo’s planned urban layout. All around it, buildings like Marunouchi Building and Shin-Marunouchi Building form one of Japan’s densest concentrations of premium office space. Yet the hotel’s parcel touches the Imperial Palace Outer Garden directly — a few dozen meters from the garden path used by joggers and strollers every morning. That quiet, at the center of the busiest city in Japan, is what the location uniquely offers.

Summary

Palace Hotel Tokyo was completed in 2012: 23 floors above ground, 4 below, approximately 114 meters tall, with a total floor area of about 94,100 square meters. The Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei design carries forward the site’s position at 1-1-1 Marunouchi, making full use of its direct adjacency to the Imperial Palace Outer Garden. There are very few places in central Tokyo where you can watch the palace’s trees from your hotel window — this is one of them.
