A Skyscraper at the Corner of Nakadori

At 1-4-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda City — where Marunouchi Nakadori meets Eitai-dori — the Marunouchi Eiraku Building stands with composed precision. Completed in January 2012, it rises 27 floors above ground and four below, reaching a height of 150 meters. The building was designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and constructed by Shimizu Corporation. In its place once stood three separate office buildings — the former Togin Building, the Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Bank Tokyo Building, and the Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank Tokyo Building — which were consolidated into a single redevelopment. The combined gross floor area reaches approximately 139,684 square meters.

The facade follows the disciplined language of glass curtain walls stacked in a vertical rhythm, allowing the tower to take its place among the Marunouchi high-rise cluster without disruption. Below ground, a pedestrian network connects to the Marunouchi Underground Passage beneath Tokyo Station, allowing access from the station without exposure to rain.

The Name “Eiraku” and the Renewal of Nakadori

The name “Eiraku” traces back to the neighborhood historically known as Eirakucho, which once occupied this stretch of Marunouchi. Since the Meiji era, Mitsubishi has shaped this district through systematic development; in the postwar decades it became Tokyo’s central business district. From the 2000s onward, Mitsubishi Estate led a sustained redevelopment cycle, beginning with the rebuilt Marunouchi Building and extending through a succession of replaced towers. The Eiraku Building, completed in 2012, was one chapter in that sequence — refreshing the Nakadori streetscape with a tower that carries the memory of the address in its name.

Nakadori itself has been transformed into a walkable promenade with greenery, stone pavement, and weekend pedestrianization. The Eiraku Building stands along this corridor as one of the faces the street presents to visitors walking between Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace.

Summary

The Marunouchi Eiraku Building was completed in January 2012 — 27 floors above ground, standing 150 meters tall. Designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, it replaced three earlier buildings on the same footprint and continues the long redevelopment arc of Marunouchi Nakadori. A few minutes’ walk from Tokyo Station and close to the Imperial Palace Outer Garden, the area is well served by hotels, making it a natural base for a day spent on foot in Marunouchi and Otemachi.
