A Late-Night Landmark at the South End of Naka-dori
Walk south from Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi South Exit along Naka-dori and a broad glass facade soon appears on your left. That is the Tokyo Building, whose lower floors — basement through the third floor — operate under the commercial name TOKIA. Completed in October 2005, the building was developed by Mitsubishi Estate and designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei. It rises 33 floors above ground and four below, reaching 164.1 meters, with a total floor area of approximately 149,000 square meters. Offices fill the fourth floor and above.
TOKIA stands out in Marunouchi for a simple reason: it stays open late. While much of the district quiets after the evening commute, TOKIA hosts restaurants that run until the early morning hours. The name itself blends the characters of “Tokyo Building” with the Japanese word tokimeki (excitement) and the letter A for “All day, Any day, Amusement.” That late-night identity has persisted for nearly two decades.
The Southern Anchor of the Marunouchi Redevelopment
The Tokyo Building arrived in 2005, during the peak years of Marunouchi’s large-scale redevelopment push. The Marunouchi Building had been rebuilt in 2002; the Shin-Marunouchi Building would follow in 2007. This tower took its place as the anchor near the southern edge of Naka-dori, closest to the JR rail lines and to the Yurakucho and Ginza areas beyond.
Where the Maru Building and Shin-Maru Building carry the symbolic weight of Tokyo Station’s front face, this building holds the working edge of the district — a transition point where the formal business zone blends into the busier pedestrian routes heading toward the Tokyo International Forum and Hibiya.
Summary
Tokyo Building (TOKIA) was completed in 2005, with 33 floors above ground and a height of 164 meters. Developed by Mitsubishi Estate, it anchors the southern stretch of Marunouchi’s Naka-dori and links the business district to Yurakucho beyond. Walk the full length of Naka-dori to its southern end and TOKIA’s lit facade will mark where the formal streetscape gives way to the wider city.
