A New Gateway in Nagoya’s West
In the Sasashima Live 24 district of Nakamura Ward, Nagoya, Global Gate completed in 2017 as a 37-storey, 2-basement-floor mixed-use tower. Developed by a consortium led by Toyota Tsusho and Daiwa House Industry along with other partners, the building brings together office floors, a hotel and ground-level retail in a single integrated structure. The Sasashima district sits within walking distance of Nagoya Station — the city’s main shinkansen hub — and the area’s proximity to the station has shaped Global Gate’s identity as a business destination with strong transport links.
Sasashima Live 24 was long designated for industrial and logistics use, and its transformation into a mixed urban quarter has been one of Nagoya’s most closely watched urban development stories. The site’s name references its 24-hectare extent and aspiration to be a lively district around the clock. Global Gate’s full opening in October 2017 marked a major milestone for the zone, drawing international firms and service businesses into an area that had largely remained underdeveloped despite its central location. Since then, the district has continued to attract new tenants and complementary facilities.
Between the Station and the Waterway
The Sasashima district is bounded by the Shin-nagoya freight railway and the Nakagawa Canal, giving it a distinctive industrial-heritage character even as new buildings rise. Global Gate’s lower floors open onto a plaza and retail street that connect with the Sasashima Live station on the Aonami Line, providing direct rail access to Nagoya Station and to the Port of Nagoya. From the upper office floors the views extend across the rail yards and canals to the west, and on clear days to the Suzuka Mountains beyond the city. This unusual combination of inner-city connectivity and an open, low-rise horizon is one of the district’s distinguishing qualities.
Summary
Completed in 2017 with 37 floors above ground and 2 below, Global Gate stands as the centrepiece of the Sasashima Live 24 redevelopment in central Nagoya. Developed by a multi-company consortium, it brought a new concentration of offices, hospitality and retail to a district that had long been bypassed by the city’s growth. A short walk from Nagoya Station, it is worth visiting to see how a former industrial zone can be remade into a contemporary urban destination.
