Nihonbashi Station, Step Out, Look Up

Tokyo Nihonbashi Tower stands in Nihonbashi 2-chome, Chuo City — the district that has served as Tokyo’s commercial and financial heart since the Edo period. Completed in 2015, the building rises 35 storeys above ground and descends four storeys below, reaching a height of approximately 180 metres, with a gross floor area of around 133,000 square metres. Nikken Sekkei designed the tower, and Sumitomo Realty & Development led the project as representative developer.

The tower is directly connected underground to Nihonbashi Station, which is served by the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Tozai Line, and Toei Asakusa Line. Three separate subway systems accessible without stepping outside is a level of connectivity that reflects Nihonbashi’s position at the centre of Tokyo’s transit network.

Renewing Nihonbashi 2-chome

Nihonbashi has undergone sustained redevelopment since the early 2000s. The cluster of tall towers that now defines the skyline around Nihonbashi Bridge — including several Mitsui-branded developments and this Sumitomo tower — has replaced an older stock of mid-rise office buildings on sites that date back to merchant Edo. Tokyo Nihonbashi Tower contributes to this renewal of the 2-chome block, its glass curtain wall facade rising cleanly above the Nihonbashi River.

The lower floors accommodate retail tenants; the upper floors are occupied by office tenants. Among them, T&D Holdings has been a prominent presence. Standing at the riverside and looking up at the tower from the old Nihonbashi Bridge, the vertical of the glass facade contrasts with the stone arch of the bridge and the elevated expressway still running above it — a layering of Tokyo’s infrastructure across different eras.
