Twin Towers on the Harumi Waterfront

On reclaimed land in Harumi, Chuo City, where canals and Tokyo Bay converge, two supertall residential towers were completed in September 2015: Deux Tours Canal & Spa, East Tower and West Tower. Developed by Sumitomo Realty & Development and built by Sumitomo Mitsui Construction, each tower rises 52 floors above ground — with one basement level below — to a height of 177.3 metres. The name comes from the French for “two towers,” a description that doubles as a precise architectural fact.

The nearest station is Kachidoki on the Toei Oedo Line, roughly a five-minute walk away. Approaching along the grid-planned streets of Harumi, the two silhouettes appear together at the end of the road, clearly legible from a distance. The flat, open geometry of reclaimed land gives the towers room to be seen in a way that denser inland districts rarely allow.

Born of a Waterfront Development Wave

The Harumi area where Deux Tours stands was once an industrial waterfront of factories and warehouses. From the 2000s onward, the combination of proximity to central Tokyo and large available plots drew a succession of major residential projects. Deux Tours was conceived within that wave as a mixed supertall — combining residences with SOHO units — and is one of the larger examples to have emerged from it.

Sumitomo Mitsui Construction integrated both towers into a unified complex, providing shared amenities including a large spa and sauna, a high-floor view lounge, a fitness gym, and a children’s room. The decision to match both towers at 52 floors creates a bilateral symmetry, as if the two towers were in quiet conversation across the podium level. The quality of the spa-centred shared space was noted at the time of completion as raising the bar for bay-area high-rise residential in Tokyo.
