Akasaka Biz Tower was completed in January 2008 as a 39-storey, 3-basement office complex rising 179.3 metres above the Akasaka district of Minato City, Tokyo. Located on a sloped site at Akasaka 5-chome, the building is the centrepiece of Akasaka Sacas — a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment led by TBS Holdings, one of Japan’s major broadcast corporations. The main contractor was Obayashi Corporation. The name “Biz” is said to combine “Business” with the concept of visual media, reflecting the complex’s dual identity as an office hub and an entertainment destination.

Akasaka Sacas occupies the former site of TBS’s main broadcasting campus. The development is unusual in Japan for being spearheaded by a television network rather than a conventional property developer: Akasaka ACT Theatre and Akasaka Blitz, a live music venue, share the same precinct as the Biz Tower’s commercial lower floors. The sloping terrain of the Akasaka hillside gives the precinct a natural depth that flat large-scale developments rarely achieve, and the transition from street level to the internal plaza creates a sense of genuine discovery.

The tower stands at 179.3 metres — comparable in height to the office towers of western Shinjuku — and is directly connected to Akasaka Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Since opening in 2008, the precinct has become one of central Tokyo’s more distinctive mixed-use destinations, where the identities of broadcasting, live performance, and everyday commerce genuinely overlap.
