A Mirrored Façade on the Harbour Edge
A two-minute walk from Kobe Station, with Harborland’s waterfront directly in view, the Kobe Crystal Tower rises 135 metres across 32 floors. Completed in 1993, it wraps its entire façade in a glass curtain wall that reflects the changing colours of the Seto Inland Sea sky above the Port of Kobe.
The building was designed by a joint venture of Kajima Corporation and Nikken Sekkei, with construction running from 1991 to 1993. Kawasaki Heavy Industries served as the building owner, anchoring the tower in a strategic location that dovetailed with the company’s Kobe operations. The early 1990s were a period of rapid height gains in Japanese commercial architecture, and the Crystal Tower’s crystalline silhouette placed it among the more distinctive office towers of that era.
At the Crossroads of Harborland and the Station District
The tower’s address in Higashikawasaki-cho places it at the junction between Kobe’s post-industrial Harborland district and its commercial station area. Harborland, developed from the early 1990s on reclaimed waterfront land, became one of Kobe’s best-known leisure and retail destinations; the Crystal Tower sits at its landward edge, bridging the business world of Kobe Station with the harbour’s open views.
The Great Hanshin Earthquake of January 1995 inflicted severe damage on Kobe, reshaping vast swathes of the city. The district has since been rebuilt, and the Crystal Tower has stood through decades of recovery and renewal. Nearby, Kobe Port Tower adds its distinctive lattice form to the same skyline, while the monumental Akashi Kaikyo Bridge spans the strait visible to the west, together framing the engineering heritage of this port city.
Summary
Kobe Crystal Tower was completed in 1993 — 32 floors, 135 metres tall, glass-curtain-wall design by Kajima Corporation and Nikken Sekkei. It stands as a survivor and sentinel at the edge of Kobe Harborland, its mirror surface unchanged since the city’s transformation after the earthquake. Walk from Kobe Station and feel the sea breeze; the tower and the harbour make a compelling gateway to the city.
