A 19-story steel-frame office building completed in August 2022 near JR Hiroshima Station. A New Tower Next to Hiroshima Station

On 31 August 2022, a new silhouette was added to the skyline of Minami Ward in Hiroshima. The Hiroshima JP Building — a 19-storey steel-frame structure with seismic-control technology — rises to approximately 88 metres with a total floor area of around 44,200 square metres. Japan Post is the developer, with Japan Post Real Estate handling project management.

The building occupies a site in Matsubara-cho, a short walk from JR Hiroshima Station’s south exit. Its ground and second floors house commercial tenants, and the Hiroshima JP Building Post Office opened on the first floor in September 2022. Upper floors serve as offices, making efficient use of this well-connected location close to one of western Japan’s busiest transport hubs.

Updating the Post Office Footprint

The Hiroshima JP Building belongs to a broader shift in how Japan Post uses its urban real estate. Traditionally, post offices occupied low-rise single-purpose structures, but in major city centres the organisation has been redeveloping sites as high-rise mixed-use towers. Tokyo’s JP Tower (KITTE) and Osaka’s JP Tower Osaka (KITTE Osaka) are earlier examples of the same logic at work.

Hiroshima’s compact city structure — built around the Peace Park and the axis running to Hiroshima Station — positions Matsubara-cho at the city’s commercial core. A planned pedestrian deck connecting the building to the new Hiroshima Station building is expected to strengthen the flow of people through this district, encouraging further investment in the surrounding area.

Summary

The Hiroshima JP Building was completed in August 2022 — 19 floors, approximately 88 metres in height, with a total floor area of around 44,200 m². Built by Japan Post, it brings a new level of commercial and office space to the front door of Hiroshima Station. When visiting Hiroshima, take a moment to walk from the station south exit and see how this tower is reshaping the city’s entry point.
