The First Shot Fired for Tenjin’s Renewal
Right in front of Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, the Tenjin Business Center rose in September 2021. The building stands 19 stories above ground with two basement levels, reaching approximately 89 metres in height and offering a total floor area exceeding 61,100 square metres. Its standard floor provides roughly 717 tsubo of rentable space, and the base-isolation system — combining laminated rubber bearings with oil dampers — delivers seismic performance alongside everyday comfort.
For Tenjin, a district historically characterised by mid-rise stock, the arrival of an international-grade tower on this prime site marked a visible shift in the skyline.
Vanguard of the Tenjin Big Bang
The building’s significance extends well beyond its physical scale. It was completed as the first project under the “Tenjin Big Bang” initiative: a public-private urban strategy launched by the City of Fukuoka that dramatically relaxed floor-area ratios across Tenjin, encouraging property owners to replace ageing buildings with world-class offices.
Conceptualised around 2015 and gathering momentum through the early 2020s, the Tenjin Big Bang has prompted multiple redevelopment projects in succession. The Tenjin Business Center served as the programme’s proof of concept, demonstrating that landowners, tenants and the municipality could align on ambitious renewal under the city’s new framework.
Fukuoka is one of Japan’s fastest-growing cities, and landmarks such as Canal City Hakata and Fukuoka Tower illustrate the city’s appetite for bold architecture. The Tenjin Business Center stands at the cutting edge of that ongoing transformation.
Summary
The Tenjin Business Center was completed in September 2021 — 19 floors, approximately 89 metres tall, with a total floor area of roughly 61,100 m². As the first building delivered under the Tenjin Big Bang programme, it opened a new chapter in the story of this vibrant city centre. If you find yourself in Fukuoka, step out of Nishitetsu Tenjin Station and look up — the renewal of Tenjin is right in front of you.
