An Asymmetric Tower West of Nagoya Station

Walk out of Nagoya Station’s west exit and within minutes a tower with a sweeping glass face rises above the rooflines of Nishi Ward. Nagoya Lucent Tower was completed in January 2007, rising 40 storeys above ground and three below to a height of 180.2 metres. Its name comes from the English word “lucent” — meaning shining or glowing — a reference to the luminous quality of the curved glass façade that faces the city.

What makes the tower visually distinctive is its asymmetry. The east face curves gently outward, wrapping the building in a broad sheet of glass that reflects the city and sky at different times of day. The west side is more restrained and conventional. The contrast gives the tower a profile that stands clearly apart from the regular rectangular blocks surrounding Nagoya Station. The lower floors house restaurants and clinics; a sky lounge on the top floor offers views across the Nobi Plain.

A Landmark on the Quieter Side of the Station

Most visitors to Nagoya know the station’s east exit first: JR Central Towers and Midland Square dominate that side with their cluster of tall commercial buildings. The west-exit neighbourhood where Lucent Tower stands has a calmer character — still close to the station, but with a lower density and a more local feel. At 40 storeys and over 180 metres, the tower remains one of the tallest structures in the Nagoya area.
