A Canyon Rising from a Former Baseball Diamond

Until 1998, the Osaka Baseball Stadium stood in the Minami district — the home ground for Nankai Electric Railway’s professional baseball team. When the stadium was demolished, its footprint became the site of a mixed-use complex with a fundamentally different character. Namba Parks opened in two phases: the first in October 2003, the second in April 2007.

The commercial building has 10 storeys above ground and three below. American architect John Jerde designed the stepped, canyon-inspired structure: layered terraces, narrow passages, and rocky overhangs evoke the feel of a natural ravine climbing through the city. From the third to the ninth floor, a rooftop garden called Parks Garden integrates trees and plantings into the building’s surface. The adjacent Parks Tower — a 30-storey, 150-metre office block designed by Nikken Sekkei and built by Obayashi Corporation — anchors the complex from the south.

Green Growing on the Building Itself

What distinguishes Namba Parks from other large commercial developments is its treatment of greenery as structural rather than decorative. Years after completion, the trees planted on each terrace have grown to fill their spaces, and the planted edges now blur the line between building and garden. From the street in summer, the upper storeys appear layered in vegetation — a quality almost unique among commercial buildings in Osaka.

The complex connects directly to Nankai Namba Station. The stepped layout creates a sequence of spaces where visitors slow down and linger rather than simply pass through — a different rhythm from the dense shopping streets around Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi nearby.
