Marunouchi’s Early-Cycle Tower

At the southern fringe of Marunouchi, facing the outer moat road and within easy reach of Tokyo Station’s Yaesu exit and the Tokyo International Forum, a slender 32-story tower rises to 149.8 meters. Pacific Century Place Marunouchi was completed in 2001 — one year before the Marunouchi Building’s large-scale redevelopment was finished next door — putting it among the very first new high-rises to mark the district’s transformation at the turn of the millennium. Designed by Nikken Sekkei and Takenaka Corporation’s joint design office with a total floor area of approximately 81,600 square meters, it arrived at the moment Marunouchi was beginning to shift from a pure office enclave into an area where luxury hospitality and business could coexist.

The building’s floors are divided between office space in the upper stories and commercial and restaurant uses on the lower levels. From Sotobori-dori it presents a clean curtain-wall facade, narrow and vertical against the surrounding blocks.

Fifty-Seven Rooms and a Deliberate Scale

The defining characteristic of Pacific Century Place Marunouchi is not its height but what it chose to do with its lower floors. The Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi occupies floors three through seven, with a total of just 57 guest rooms — an unusually small count for a branded hotel of that caliber. The intention was explicit: by limiting the room count and placing the hotel directly in front of Tokyo Station, the property could maximize the premium of location rather than competing on scale. The result was a hotel that opened as one of the most intimate luxury addresses in central Tokyo, with a room rate to match.

The combination of a high-rise office building with a deliberately small luxury hotel brand was novel in Marunouchi at the time. As the district later attracted additional luxury hotel flags, this building can be read as the experiment that opened that path — an early demonstration that the blocks around Tokyo Station could support world-class hospitality alongside finance and corporate tenants.
